Sleep Disorder Center
Polysomnograms (PSG) are sleep studies and are performed overnight. During a sleep study the technologists monitor the following items: |

Brainwave activity (EEG) |
| 2. |
Eye movements |
| 3. |
Leg and arm movements |
| 4. |
Muscle tone |
| 5. |
Heart rhythm |
| 6. |
Nasal airflow |
| 7. |
Chest wall movement |
| 8. |
Oxygen saturation of the blood |
Polysomnograms are useful for disorders such as:
| 1. |
Sleep apnea (stopping breathing while asleep) |
| 2. |
Periodic limb movement disorder (legs/arms jerking while asleep) |
| 3. |
Parasomnias (sleep walking, talking, nightmares, etc.) |
| 4. |
Difficulty sleeping |
| 5. |
Narcolepsy |
A multiple sleep latency test (MSLT) is performed during the day to determine the degree of sleepiness.
Special preparation is necessary for this test. Wash hair and use no dressing or hair spray. You may eat and go about your normal activities, unless you are told otherwise by your doctor.
