Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS)

Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS) are performed by applying very small electrical shocks to the skin overlying a nerve and recording how fast the nerve conducts the electricity and what the muscle reaction or sensory reaction to the shock is.

This technique can determine if there is involvement of the sensory or motor elements of the nerve and if there are abnormalities of the nerve itself or the covering of the nerve (myelin). This information allows the physician to determine if the problem is with the muscle or nerve and if it is a nerve problem where the problem is and what type.
NCS assist in the diagnosis of a variety of neurological disorders to include muscular dystrophy, inflammation of muscles, pinched nerves, peripheral neuropathy (nerve damage in the arms or legs), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and myasthenia gravis.

Special preparation is necessary for this test. Wash skin using no lotions/oils. You may eat and go about your normal activities, unless you are told otherwise by your doctor. For more information contact kingc@stfran.com or call (318) 327-4868.
