Breast Cancer Screening Recommendations
The Kitty DeGree Breast Health Center endorses the Breast Screening Guidelines set forth by the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Breast Cancer Foundation.
Women with a family history of breast cancer and those with other concerns about personal risk should consult a healthcare provider. Screening tests may be needed more often or started sooner than expected.
As part of a total approach to breast health, it is important that women become familiar with their own bodies, play an active role in their health, and develop a close partnership with healthcare providers.
The Susan G. Komen for the Cure Breast Cancer Foundation recommends the following:
• Mammograms every year starting at age 40.
• Women under 40 with a family history of breast cancer or other concerns should talk with a healthcare provider. Screening tests may be needed more often and/or started earlier.
• Clinical breast exams by a healthcare provider at least every 3 years starting at age 20, and every year after 40.
• Breast self-exams every month starting by age 20.
